  • STOP signs fall under the sign designation R1-1. The minimum size to be compliant (according to the 2009 edition - latest) is 30 x 30 inches.

    IMPORTANT - Engineering Grade reflective material complies with the minimum standard when brand new, however our tests have shown that atmospheric conditions can degrade the material sufficiently to bring this material into a non-compliant state. Given the strict requirements and the potential consequences on public highways, we do not sell Engineering Grade Stop Signs as MUTCD compliant.

    Viewable distance:

    The 30 x 30 & 36 x 36 inch engineering grade reflective aluminum STOP sign meets the minimum requirements for roadway traffic management as set by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Due to their additional reflective coverage, these STOP signs are the ideal solution for areas where you there are visual distractions or environmental conditions that provide less than optimal visibility.

    Conditions often encountered on municipal roads and highways require signage to be clearly visible under less than optimal conditions. Therefore the minimum standard we would recommend for such conditions would be High Intensity Reflective coating, which provides night time visibility up to 1000 feet. For high-speed highways or for the most challenging conditions a Diamond Grade Reflective coating is the best choice as it is visible from 1500 feet (12x brighter than engineering grade). Both of these options are great choices for non municipal or highway use, where visual distractions impair the driver's concentration, such as busy parking lots.

    What are the best practices for Mounting and placement?

    When mounting the sign be sure the top of the sign is mounted flush with the top of the post and allow a 1" gap between any supplemental signs. Supplemental signs should be no less than 4ft from the road surface. Be sure the the sign is no less than 6ft to from the edge of the pavement. The bottom of the sign post should be no more than 7ft from the road surface in urban areas and 5ft in rural areas.
