Safety in June: ‘Keep Each Other Safe’

workplace safety

Each June, the National Safety Council — and thousands of other organizations across the country, including Emedco — works to raise awareness about safety by putting on National Safety Month. The goal of the annual campaign is to increase safety at work, on roads, and in homes. This year, the theme for the month of June is to “Keep Each Other Safe.”

Each week of June will be dedicated to highlighting a different safety topic:

Week 1: Stand Up to Falls

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), slips, trips, and falls account for the largest number of general industry accidents. They’re responsible for roughly 15 percent of accidental deaths and are second only to motor vehicle accidents as the leading cause of worker fatalities. However, in the construction industry, falls are the leading cause of death, accounting for nearly 39 percent of deaths in the construction industry alone, according to the most recent OSHA statistics. If your employees work from heights on a regular basis, be sure you equip them with the right fall protection equipment.

Week 2: Recharge to Be In Charge (Focusing on Fatigue)

Your employees are not going to be productive if they aren’t well-rested. Take it upon yourself to remind your workers to get adequate sleep every night after work. Consider providing anti-fatigue mats to your employees to help them work more comfortably. The anti-fatigue mats are perfect for any area you’d use a regular mat. From wet, indoor kitchens to outdoor garages and dry offices and facilities in between, there are mats to fit virtually every work environment

Week 3: Prepare for Active Shooters

Hopefully, a day will never pass in which you’ll have to put your preparation into practice, but it’s important for you and your co-workers to be prepared for active shooters on your workplace property. Train your workers on the best ways to hide from a shooter, flee a shooting rampage and prepare for other unforeseen — and unpredictable — events.

Week 4: Don’t Just Sit There (Focusing on Ergonomics)

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are responsible for almost 33 percent of worker injury and illness cases, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Lifting heavy items, pulling and pushing heavy loads and repetitive motions can cause sprains, pinched nerves, slipped discs, and even tendinitis, in extreme circumstances. Workplace ergonomics products — such as back supports, knee pads, wrist wraps, and elbow braces — can go a long way to help your workers avoid these types of injuries.
