Thermometers: A First Aid Kit Essential

Temperature is one of your body’s vital signs, and a significant change in your temperature may indicate illness, or signal that you require immediate medical attention. The most accurate way of checking your temperature is by using thermometers.

Infrared Thermometer

An infrared thermometer is equipped with an electronic trigger lock for continuous measurement.

Thermometers are an essential part of your first aid kit and having the right thermometer is crucial. However because of the numerous options available, selecting the right thermometer can be overwhelming. Here are some of the most common types of body thermometers.

Mercury Thermometers

You are probably most familiar with this type of thermometer: a thin stick of glass containing mercury. They can be used in the mouth, rectum or armpit. However,  according to USA.gov, 20 states have banned mercury thermometers because of mercury’s dangerous effect. If you are still using a mercury thermometer, consider replacing it.

Digital Thermometers

A standard digital thermometer uses electronic heat sensors to quickly and accurately record body temperature. They are best used orally or rectally for infants 3 months old or younger. For older children and adults, oral readings usually give precise results, while armpit readings tend to be less accurate.

Digital Ear Thermometers

Also known as tympanic thermometers, digital ear thermometers use an infrared ray to measure temperature inside your ear canal. They quickly and accurately record the body temperature of pretty much everyone: infants older than 6 months, children and adults. However, don’t use them on newborns as earwax and small ear canals can interfere with the accuracy of the temperature reading.

Disposable thermometers

Disposable thermometers are inexpensive and easy to use.

Temporal Artery Thermometers

The temporal artery thermometer is the latest evolution of temperature-taking products. You just have to press a button and swipe the sensor across your forehead once, and an infrared radiation will read your temperature. It’s quick and easy to use, although it’s more expensive than other types of thermometers.

Temperature Strips

This type contains liquid crystals that react to heat. It is very easy to use. Just stick a temperature strip onto your forehead, and it will register your temperature by changing color. However this strip has a downside: its reading can be affected by the environmental temperature.

Disposable Thermometers

Usually made of plastic, disposable thermometers such as a NexTemp thermometer are an inexpensive and easy way to check body temperature. They can be used orally and under the armpit for precise readings.

It’s never too late to complete your first aid kit. Visit the American Red Cross to see a complete list of what your first aid kit should contain. Regularly check your kits to ensure everything you need is there; you’ll never know when you might need the contents of this small pouch to save a life.
